Government Seek Views From Classic Car Industry
15th May 2024
The Government have asked the DVLA to seek advice from the classic car industry, plus enthusiasts and drivers, regarding their thoughts on improving the way classic cars are maintained, after revealing that the current policies in place have been largely unchanged for 40 years.
Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, has been quoted on the Government’s website saying, “The way we restore and protect classic cars has not kept up with the times and evolving technologies, which is why we are calling for industry and enthusiasts to have their say on how to best protect these British classics for decades to come”.
Changes to the way classic vehicles are registered, rebuilt, and electrically converted are up for discussion, which means that classic car dealers and restorers have a chance to influence the way the industry moves forward by responding to the Government’s request.
Expert knowledge and suggestions are being sought before the deadline of midnight on July 4th and you can respond to the call for evidence here.
Future-proofing older cars is expected to give a boost to jobs in the classic car sector, which is currently valued at £18 billion, while the Government are also hoping to see a rise in tourism for classic car events, such as Goodwood Revival.
The call for evidence can be read in full on the Government’s website here.
