Is Your Dealer Website Content Mobile Responsive?
23rd September 2022
As more and more car buyers are searching for their next vehicle online using a mobile phone, dealers need to make sure their website content is fully mobile responsive so that it is displaying correctly on handheld devices and not harming their chances of making a sale, which is examined in part two of Dragon2000’s blog series aimed at improving dealer websites.
Ensuring your website is mobile responsive means to have your website’s functions and features visually adapting for each type of device it is displayed on, with the content loading automatically to fit the different screen sizes. All car dealers should have their own responsive websites in place by now, as website providers have moved on from the days of creating completely separate mobile websites for businesses in order to improve functionality on smaller devices.
However, simply having a mobile responsive website set up doesn’t mean that dealers no longer need to thoroughly check their content. Using a handful of devices to analyse your website allows you to replicate the customer online journey as accurately as possible and uncover any issues which you otherwise would not be aware of.
Images that contain text to promote offers at your dealership may look great on a computer, but if this shrinks down too much on a mobile phone, then it’s likely your message is no longer reaching customers, who will be struggling to read it at the smaller size. Vehicle diagrams are another common image used by dealers and garages which are effective on a large screen but difficult to read on a mobile phone.
If you’re using text on images, try using only key words or phrases so that it’s a small amount to read and can be displayed large enough to be seen on all devices. Longer pieces of text can always sit outside of the image while still clearly referencing the visual on screen.
Videos promoting your services should also be checked from start to finish across all devices to ensure any text featured is displaying as intended. For example, if your video is designed to sit at the top of the home page and play automatically in the background, then any text in the footage could be hiding behind overlapping content, such as a welcome message, once it has been automatically resized for another device.
Google’s search results favour websites which are fully mobile responsive, so if you’re not ranking higher than your competitors and your website struggles with your content on a mobile device, then this is where you need to make changes. Customers are unlikely to revisit your website on a computer if they’re having issues reading your content first time on a mobile phone, so it’s important to grab their attention at the first attempt to gain their business.
